The City of Moonee Valley falls within Melbourne’s network of middle ring municipalities that are generally located 20 km from Melbourne’s Central Business District. The City of Moonee Valley is located north-west of Melbourne’s Central Business District bounded by the City of Hume to the north, the City of Moreland to the east, City of Maribyrnong to the south and City of Brimbank to the west.
The municipality western boundary is characterised by the Maribyrnong River bordered by extensive parkland. The eastern boundary is bordered by the Moonee Ponds Creek and the Moonee Ponds Creek trail that connects many reserves, parks and sporting grounds along the creek.
The City of Moonee Valley is a culturally diverse area with a substantial residential population. The municipality is well connected by the Craigieburn train line and tram network. The municipality comprises the Moonee Valley Racecourse, Essendon Airport and the shopping precincts of Moonee Ponds, Essendon and Airport West.
