The City of Moreland falls within Melbourne’s network of middle ring municipalities that are generally located 20 km from Melbourne’s Central Business District. The City of Moreland is located north of Melbourne’s Central Business District bounded by the City of Hume to the north, the City of Darebin to the east, City of Maribyrnong and City of Melbourne to the south and City of Moonee Valley to the west. The eastern boundary is bordered by Merri Creek and Moonee Ponds Creek to the West.
The municipality is well serviced by the public transport network. The Upfield and Craigieburn lines run through Moreland. Many buses run in an east-west direction to integrate with the tram and train routes.
The City of Moreland is a culturally diverse area with one third of the population born overseas. The city comprises a mix of residential and industrial development with a major retailing strip along Sydney Road. Fawkner Crematorium and the former Pentridge Prison are notable features of the municipality.
